Following the launch of IGTV, Instagram quietly launched the lite version of its Instagram mobile app on Google Play Store without making any official announcements; the Instagram Lite app.
Instagram Lite App Launched Now Available On Google’s Play Store
The new Instagram lite app takes only 573 KB of your phone storage. The lite version is only 1/55th the size of Instagram’s main app which takes about 32 MB of device internal storage.
Instagram Lite App offers all the basic features of the main app such as browsing Insta Feed and Stories, filters, editing photos & videos to post on Feed or Stories and browsing the Explore. You’ll also notice a coloured progress bar while browsing the app like we’ve seen on Facebook lite.
However, the app is still limited to some features like sharing videos, Direct messaging with friends and the integration of the newly launched IGTV.
The launch of Instagram Lite will benefit developing countries with slower connections by allowing more users to join the platform and also provide a lag free budget handsets with less storage capacity.
Also, Instagram last month launched a revamped mobile website too for users based in such countries. The social media giant also hit a milestone of over a billion users last week.
The company began testing the Instagram Lite app in Mexico and says it will expand to more countries later this year with added features like messaging and video posting features too.
Designing of lite version app basically gives you a less bloated device and more free storage and ram memory to utilize. The Instagram community is consistently growing with the addition of 100 million users every four months with a major portion of it coming from developing countries. With the launch of its Lite app, Instagram is definitely going to extend its global domination.
